Black History Month is the annual recognition of the history and achievements of African Americans and an acknowledgment of their central role in the American story. Black history is American history! We believe that it is not enough to acknowledge Black History Month with a quote or a post, and more than ever we need to use this opportunity to educate and empower our employees as well as our larger audience. We are listening to the stories of our families, friends, and coworkers to deepen our understanding of the importance of Black representation and identity. We are striving to uplift and spotlight Black businesses and entrepreneurs, and advocate for meaningful changes in our society.
So, what are we doing?
- Fostering education and connection to the Black Family, by inviting our employees to register to join the virtual event: “The Bonds of Family and Legacy” which is a program coordinated by the Heinz History Center and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. This is a meaningful, moderated discussion with thought leaders and influencers that explores the Black Family – the 2021 theme for Black History Month.
- Spotlighting, sharing, and supporting Black-owned businesses across various industries – including some beautiful, gourmet chocolate treats from our friends at Chocolate Secrets in Dallas, Texas.
- Joining together as an organization to connect to some of the issues that the Black community faces by creating a reading club for the month of February. We will be reading “Born a Crime” by Trevor Noah and have a planned discussion at the end of the month, along with touchpoints throughout to keep the conversation and learning points vibrant.
- Highlighting volunteer opportunities. Aligning with NBMBAA (National Black MBA Association) to create educational opportunities and economic growth for African Americans and diverse business professionals. NBMBAA has partnered with Mentor Spaces to connect Black early and mid-career professionals with mentors to maximize their career potential and to provide companies with direct pathways to exceptional talent.
- Highlighting donation opportunities to amazing organizations that push to make a difference in the lives of many.
- ASALH – Is an organization established in 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. The group is the founder of Black History Month, and continues to carry forth with great work.
- MBK Alliance – which leads a national call to action focused on building safe and supportive communities for boys and young men of color where they feel valued and have clear pathways to opportunity.
The Arroyo Strategy family is proud to not just celebrate Black History Month but be actively engaged in creating an educated workplace that celebrates diversity, actively works to lift up our communities, and advocates for change. Know the past, shape the future.
